Some 1999 Georgia state quarters minted with experimental metals are highly sought after by collectors, with some selling for as much as $10,000.
An error on some 1999 Georgia state quarters has pushed the value of some of the coins to as high as $10,000. The key to cashing in as much as $10,000 could lie in your change drawer. 1999 state quarters from Georgia have “several types of errors,” with the biggest coming in the form of one you might not catch at first.Turns out, one error version was “struck on experimental metals, called planchets.” These were actually intended for the Sacagawea dollar that was released in 2000. U.S.
Coins Guide said in a blog that the planchets were used because folks back then were “curious to see how they would look on quarters.” “The Treasury decided not to go with the alloy on quarters, but the ones minted with it were still released and are now very much desired by collectors,” it wrote. The report said that some of the quarters have sold for as much as $10,000 with another selling for $7,200 back in 2022. So, how do you know if you have one of these 25-cent pieces that is actually worth big-time bucks? Well, for starters, as we have established already, it should be a quarter, minted in Georgia in 1999. Per GoBankingRates, the quarter should weigh between 5.9-6.3 grams on a coin scale. It said these quarters often look thicker than a regular quarter with a golden or greenish color. It said the quarter will also not have the copper (orange-colored) stripe along its edge and would lack some or all of the ridges that run along the edge
