This season of Worst Cooks in America takes a turn for the worse with over-the-top acting, chaotic editing, and a focus on entertainment over genuine cooking improvement.
Worst Cooks in America Season 28 on Food Network boasts a cast of fan-favorite heroes and villains from reality television. However, despite this abundance of reality stars, this season feels anything but genuine. Unlike the earlier seasons, Worst Cooks in America Season 28 has everything unnecessarily played up, and lately, the show seems to be doing way too much. Worst Cooks in America began in 2010 with Anne Burrell as the lead mentor.
As the title suggests, the series has thrived by taking some of the worst chefs around the country and teaching them basic cooking skills. It's a funny concept, proven by its longevity. Season 28, however, added an exciting twist, inviting reality TV stars to come in and learn, earning money for charity rather than themselves. Watching people step outside their comfort zones and the chaos that ensues can be entertaining. But sometimes, Worst Cooks in America is so exaggerated and fake that it's clear the show is trying too hard. One of the main problems with Season 28 is the overacting and exaggeration of how bad each contestant is at cooking. For example, Big Brother hero Frankie Grande overacts his cooking ineptitude, forcing a dirty joke into nearly every scenario. Another Big Brother alum makes this a tough watch; Rachel Reilly, a notoriously entertaining villain on Big Brother and The Amazing Race, has lost her spark on Worst Cooks in America. To start, Rachel made turkey and chocolate brussel sprout lasagna. Besides being outrageously bad at cooking, Rachel overdoes many of her reactions. These dramatics take away from the essential part of the series: reality. The issues in the kitchen are usually believable, but the exaggerations and overacting detract from that. Whether it is the choice of the cooks or the producers, the cast's acting in Worst Cooks in America is not believable. The editing is as over the top as the exaggerated acting. Every ten seconds, there is a cutaway moment or a gag. Some regular edits appear throughout the season. For example, Skid Row singer Sebastian Bach always gets captions of gothic text and metal music. Other examples of over-the-top editing include the greenscreens and the choice to take the heads of the cast and put them onto other objects. Besides editing the cast, Worst Cooks in America adds pictures and clips that take the attention off of the cooking. In episode six, the show puts a clip art gif of a dragon on screen multiple times. The constant editing gags get distracting and take away from the point of the series.Although there are some saving graces to the latest season of Worst Cooks in America, like Sebastian Bach. Despite the unnecessary graphics, the singer seemed to be genuinely having fun while in the competition. Unfortunately, Bach did not make it to the end of the season. Wes Bergmann and Bartise Bowden's bromance is also fun to watch. Even the two professional chefs, Jeff Mauro and Antonia Lofaso, seem to have loosened their competition belts and have been having fun alongside the cast. Although there are some fun bits and cast members on Season 28 of Worst Cooks in America, they are overshadowed by the copious edits and exaggerated jokes. Ultimately, despite some good moments, Worst Cooks in America is hard to watch because of how fake it feels, and all the cooks are overdoing their characters. They used to want to learn, but now they have fun, leading to Worst Cooks in America Season 28 overdoing everything.
