A Victorian livestock agent says lambs and sheep are being slaughtered at the saleyards because some animals are not meeting quality standards.

"So we are seeing some older lambs that haven't quite made [the standard] or are a bit more unfinished … being put down at the yards. To make matters worse, Mr Starick said local abattoirs had been experiencing staff shortages and facing pressure to process higher volumes. "Producers have held onto their animals hoping for better prices to come, but they haven't. So they're trying to sell them now — we're at saturation point," he said.In Ballarat, Central Victoria Livestock Exchange manager Jeff Paull said conditions were not as bad."With China [reopening its] barley market, the cost of feed has jumped in the past couple of weeks," Mr Paull said.

"At the end of the day our income will be halved; you're getting half the price for the same product."
