'Turns out, my partner had gotten a new car, a new home, broken our lease, had a move-out date, and I was the last to know.'

where people revealed their worst breakup stories.and lo and behold, more came flooding in. Yup, people suck; everybody's endured at least one remarkably shitty breakup in their life! Anywaaaay, here ya go:"Two weeks before our 24th anniversary, I told my ex I felt like I didn't have a husband because of the way he was acting.

where people revealed their worst breakup stories...and lo and behold, more came flooding in. Yup, people suck; everybody's endured at least one remarkably shitty breakup in their life! Anywaaaay, here ya go:"Two weeks before our 24th anniversary, I told my ex I felt like I didn't have a husband because of the way he was acting. He said he needed a one-week break and would stay in the RV that week. He never came back, never gave me a true explanation, avoided me at all costs, and eventually, I had to put two and two together and get divorced. He hasn't even seen me since then, except when picking up the kids once or twice, and it's been two years. He just packed one bag of luggage and never looked back. I had to empty the house all by myself. He didn't even ask for family pics. He was even okay with the kids and me moving out of state to be with my family. Now he lives with his girlfriend and her kids.""He was excited to give me my Christmas present early. It was a kitten, and I wasn't allowed to have cats at my apartment. He broke up with me the next day. Apparently, he thought the kitten would keep me company on Christmas, so he didn't have to feel bad.""He had moved to another state, and the plan was that I would spend several months with him, and later he would spend several months with me, and so on. We both worked either remotely or were self-employed. I was supposed to go stay with him starting before the holidays, but I'd been having trouble pinning him down on exactly when. Yet, he kept insisting that of course he wanted me to come, and why would I even assume otherwise? Anyway, one morning as the holidays neared, we were on our typical FaceTime call . After about 30 minutes of chitchat, I brought up the topic of 'when,' and he said, 'This is really hard.'" "He told me I wouldn't be going to see him, and he didn't think we should continue with our relationship, period. He said that he loved me as much as his lifelong friends, but he wasn't *in* love with me anymore. He also told me he wanted me to still visit as 'friends' after the holidays. Uh-huh. Sure. But when I said I'd need some time, he disappeared. He owed me several thousand dollars, and eventually, I got about half, with excuses for why I was only owed half. He has a sugar momma now . I know I dodged a bullet. I wish her luck.""I dated the love of my life for four years. Then, I found out he had gotten engaged to someone else but intended to keep seeing me even after they married. Guess he was going to put his wedding ring in his pocket. Anyway, he wasn't as slick as he thought because the wedding announcement in the paper was seen by half of my family. They ended up divorced. Messed me up though, because 30 years later, I still have feelings for him.""We were both in our late 20s, and this was pre-social media, pre-constant contact via cellphone, text, etc. She was the most physically beautiful woman I'd ever met. We had a lot in common, bonded over baseball, similar movies, etc. I travelled for work , and we would email or talk on the phone during the week. Early in the relationship, she mentioned she didn't want to bring me around her family for holidays, which made sense; that can be high pressure, so I went with it. But over time, I never met more than one of her good friends, and I never met her family, whereas she knew all of my friends and had met my dad." "We had been together about 14 months, and over Christmas, she just disappeared. Wouldn't reply to emails or phone calls. In mid-February, she left a message on my voicemail at my office, and I got it on Monday morning. She let me know that the day she left the message was her wedding day, and she owed me an explanation. She was marrying a professional baseball player, and I had been 'an amazing part of her life, and it’s too bad the timing was wrong,' but she had been with him the entire time I had been dating her. That's why she didn't want me around friends and family, and it explained a few other little odd things. I took great comfort in finding out that her marriage lasted less than five months. She caught him cheating on her while on the road.""I was dumped on my birthday at prom after he danced with the girl I wasn't supposed to worry about to my favorite song. Totally ruined the song for me.""We'd been together for 14 years. She told me her coworker made her feel things that I could never over the last two years. She said that I filled her with anxiety and depression.""We had been together for five and a half years. He invited me over for dinner at the house he lived in. He and his roommates would take turns cooking, and that night it was his turn. I arrived after work, helped him cook, sat at the dinner table with all four of his roommates, and had a lovely dinner. After dinner, he asked me if I wanted to go to his room to talk. He proceeded to break up with me out of nowhere. I asked him if there was someone else, and he took a long time to reply, eventually saying no, but I knew better. I grabbed my stuff and ran out of there, then drove the 25 minutes home, sobbing my eyes out. Honestly, I can't even remember the drive home. I was devastated." "The kicker? He had been done with the relationship for months, and had told all of his roommates that he was going to break up with me after dinner that night. They had actively discussed this without me, then they all sat around that dinner table smiling knowing full well what was going to happen. And not a single one felt the need to inform or warn me. These are people I thought were my friends. I also found out afterwards that he been seeing and sleeping with other women throughout our relationship. And that there was someone else, which was one of the main reasons he dumped me. They worked together and I was always wary of her, when I voiced my concerns to him in the past he always told me nothing was going on. He immediately started dating her afterwards . Seems she had to good sense to dump HIS ass a few months after that. Luckily, I went on to meet the love of my life and have been happily together with them for almost 14 years. It sucks how he chose to go about it, but honestly, losing that dead weight was one of the best things to ever happen to me. I learned my self worth and grew a backbone. Screw him and his shitty roommates. I hope they've gone on to be better people, but I doubt it.""I had just had a bilateral mastectomy with reconstruction. He ghosted me before ghosting was even a thing. I told him, when I realized what he'd done, that he was a coward. We had both been widowed, so I would have understood if he'd said, 'I can't go through this again.' But to go without a word? Cowardly, especially for an adult in their 50s.""He was my first boyfriend, and I met him right out of high school at a party a girlfriend had taken me to. He was nice but spoiled by his parents; he was an only child. After being together for four years, he was the best man at a wedding. The day of the wedding, he was gone all day. He said it was his 'duty' to spend time with the maid of honor. The next week, I called him every day, but he never called back. This was before cellphones. I finally went shopping at Target, where the bride worked. I checked out at her register, and all she said was that she was sorry. Two weeks later, he came over to my house, telling me he needed a month to figure things out. He started dating the maid of honor, got married, and had 1 kid. After three years, he divorced her and wanted to restart our relationship. NOOOO.""Sophomore year in college, we went to separate schools and hadn't seen each other in person in a few weeks. I got home a few days after her for Thanksgiving, and I invited her over to see each other and my family. I get a call that she's in the driveway and to come outside. I got in her car and broke up with me immediately. Funny thing was, I hadn't been home for more than an hour... Happy Thanksgiving to me!""We were together about seven years, engaged for several of them. We had hit a rough patch the year prior, but it truly felt like we had gotten through it stronger, and I felt incredibly happy and confident in the relationship. We lived in this but super awesome, lofty apartment, and one day my neighbor said he was sad we were moving. When I asked what he meant, he told me he saw that our apartment was available the next month. Caught off guard, I laughed and said there was some mistake, and even emailed my property manager that night to clear up the confusion." "Turns out, my partner had gotten a new car, a new home, broken our lease, had a move-out date, and I was the last to know. Shockingly, it was still a mostly cordial situation . I still feel like an idiot when I remember how I laughed and corrected my neighbor, and emailed the property manager. Or how my friends had to pretend to be shocked when we 'told them together.' Oooof.""I was seeing a guy from work . About a month and a half in, I was moving, and there was a gap between the end of my old lease and the start of my new lease. To avoid moving too fast, I chose to stay with friends instead of the guy I was seeing, but he helped me move my stuff into storage, plan decorations for the new place, and get excited about the new neighborhood, etc. One day during the gap, he invited me back to his place after work, and we had a really nice, chill evening. The next day at work, he seemed happy to see me and made plans for us to spend the following day together since we both had the day off." "Later that same night, he broke up with me out of nowhere, over text, while I was about fall asleep on my friend's couch. I was shocked and devastated and he refused to tell me why, saying that he'd rather just be friends. I told him that I didn't want to be friends with anyone I couldn't trust, and instead spent my day off digging his things out of my storage unit so that I could leave them in his lunch bag in the work fridge."—Anonymous"My ex-husband had an affair after 10 years of marriage. All the signs were there. He started coming home later and later and sleeping with his phone in his pocket. Then one night, he just didn't come home. I texted him later that day from work, 'Who is she?' And he replied, 'No one you know and no one we work with.' Turns out, not only was it someone from his adult soccer team , but one of the medical residents training at the hospital we both worked at. And she was married to another doctor who was in TX at the time, doing his radiation oncology fellowship.", because once that sweet ass tea got around the hospital we both worked at for a damn decade, that shit spread like wildfire. All the other nurses, techs, transporters, social workers, and most of the damn doctors know our bullshit. He was wining and dining her. He knocked her up before we were divorced. I found out because he 'accidentally' texted our 11-year-old daughter something about the baby and knew I would see it. They got married at a courthouse, and he somehow rode the medical resident's coattails to Switzerland for their honeymoon. And while she was doing med student doctor shit, he was texting me pictures of the Swiss Alps and telling me he never knew life could be so grand. Oh, and he also told me he 'upgraded.' I replied, 'Like I'm an iPhone 4.' 10 years, two children, he put me through a bankruptcy AND a foreclosure, only to upgrade a year later. Thanks, guy.""I was with a guy for three and a half years. We lived together and were actively planning our future. One night, I came home from work, and he told me to sit down. He proceeded to break up with me, told me that he no longer found me attractive because I had gained weight, didn't think we should have kids together because of my issues and that he'd actually been thinking about breaking up with me for a year. Two weeks before this, he had asked me to send him the engagement rings I liked so he could take a look and plan things out." "After he broke up with me, I gave him the weekend to move his things out. He left a ton of crap at the apartment, left his cat there for months because his dad was allergic, and continued to have things mailed to the apartment for weeks afterwards, including lingerie addressed to another person! Looking back, I'm so glad it happened because he was actually a terrible person, but I didn't know any better. He convinced a therapist that I had Borderline Personality Disorder , constantly put me down, sexually assaulted me , flirted with people in front of me, and didn't believe in me when I told him I wanted to work in the veterinary field. Everything was always about him. It worked out for me. I ended up meeting my husband a few months later, and he is the most supportive, loving, kind, wonderful man who never fails to tell me every day how much he loves me. We’ve been happily married for over six years now!""I was married to my ex for eight years. He was serving as an independent contractor in Iraq, and I was still in the States, so we decided to plan a vacation together overseas. We spent two weeks vacationing, having the time of our lives. He flew back to Iraq, and I back to the States. Two days after I got back home, he sent me an email wanting a divorce, stating he wasn't in love with me anymore, that he wanted to travel the world and have some kids . We have not spoken to each other since. He didn't even show up for the divorce hearing. I had to endure it all by myself and had to pack all his belongings for his parents to pick up. I was devastated at the time, but looking back, I am so thankful. I am now married to an amazing man, and we have a child together. My ex, last I heard, was living in the basement of his parents' house, single, and no kids.""We dated for four years, and because of COVID, we had to do long distance for a huge part of it. I found out I had to have a very serious surgery, and I really wanted him there because I was scared. Instead, he broke up with me, saying he didn't think he could be the man I wanted him to be. In the four years we dated, I flew to four different countries to visit him, as he was a 'citizen of the world' and 'the world was his home.' Before that day, we never fought, and I thought we loved each other very much. Still trying to figure out what happened."And:"My high school/college boyfriend was a trip. He was my first real boyfriend, but he was rude to my brothers and sometimes even my parents. He soured those relationships enough that, when I moved out for college, my parents were glad to get some space. We went to different schools, and he was about two hours away. I didn't have my car, but borrowed a friend's car to drive to his dorm one weekend. Within that weekend, he gave me a promise ring, I gave him one, we had lots of sex, and then on my last night there, immediately after having sex, he just looked at me and said, 'I can't do this anymore.'" "We argued all night through sobs, and I left the next morning with us 'still together.' Then, a short time after that, I realized we were no longer Facebook friends. I could still see his profile picture, but no other information, so I phoned a friend and asked her to check his relationship status. He was in a relationship with a girl he promised me was just his friend. He was home with his parents that weekend, so I went over there, confronted him, and gave him the end he wanted. First loves, man."What's the worst way you've been broken up with? Tell us in the comments or share anonymously using this form.
