City dwellers seeking refuge in the mountains amid the pandemic has put immense pressure on resort towns such as Big Bear.
His skis nearby, John Gabin lounged at a picnic table, gazing up toward the steep slopes carpeted with snow. His 4-year-old son sprawled on his outstretched legs.
“We are experiencing, in a microeconomic sense, the problems that everyone else in the whole country is experiencing,” said Ellen Clarke, executive director of the Big Bear Chamber of Commerce. “Only in our small community, we have a very little population, and it hurts — it hurts a lot.”Brody Barr helps customers Justin and Brandon Han of Whittier at Johnny’s Ski and Board House in Big Bear Lake.
The death has led more workers at the shop to be more cautious about COVID-19 safety while on the job, Barr said. Ski and snowboarding season is in full swing in mountain resorts like Big Bear, where tubers at Alpine Slide at Magic Mountain make a run. Most days, he’s left fielding phone calls, trying to persuade people to work for him, as he runs between his shops trying to plug holes in his business.
