SMU will take on Boston College Saturday at 11 a.m. CT.

SMU wide receiver Jordan Hudson receives a touchdown pass against Boston College defensive back Ashton McShane during the second half of an NCAA college football game at SMU, Saturday, Nov. 16, 2024, in University Park.

Coming off a big win against a blue blood ACC program, the Mustangs had to hit the road to face a team that didn’t have all that high expectations.“Last time we went on the road, we did not play well, so we got to be motivated to do better this time,” SMU head coach Rhett Lashlee said.Get the latest D-FW sports news, analysis and opinion delivered straight to your inbox. In fact, they need to win out andThe Mustangs, who have already stumbled three times this year, need to be perfect. On paper, that shouldn’t be too difficult against a 1-8 Boston College team that doesn’t yet have a win in conference play. Southern Methodist Mustangs safety Ahmaad Moses cheers with hit teammates as he intercepts a pass during overtime of a college football game against the Miami Hurricanes, on Saturday, Nov. 1, 2025, at Gerald J. Ford Stadium in Dallas. But SMU has played Boston College more in the last three years than any other ACC team and has struggled with the Eagles. In the 2023 Fenway Bowl, the 24th-ranked Mustangs fell 23-14. In 2024, Boston College played SMU closer than anyone in the month of November, as the Mustangs won 38-28 at Ford Stadium on Nov. 16.“This has been a hard matchup for us,” Lashlee said. “Last year in the league, they played us better than anybody here at home. They ran the ball well. They play action well. They do a really nice job of moving the chains and keeping the ball and milking the clock.” SMU is also playing a power conference opponent for the sixth consecutive week with no breaks. SMU hasn’t done so since its Southwest Conference days. The schedule is continuing to take a toll on the Mustangs, who may be without a handful of starters again this week.Defensive linemen Cam Robertson and cornerback Jaelyn Davis-Robinson, who both missed the last two games, are more likely to return after the bye than this Saturday. Offensive lineman Logan Parr, cornerback Marcellus Barnes Jr. and defensive tackle Terry Webb are all questionable. Running back Chris Johnson Jr. still isn’t 100%.Neither is quarterback Kevin Jennings, who seems to re-aggravate an ankle injury each week, but has continued to play through the pain. “We’re as beat up as we’ve been all year at this point, so we’re trying to get as much duct tape as we can to hold it all together,” Lashlee said. “But the game doesn’t care. The game demands the same every week, the same physicality, the same execution efforts.” If SMU can survive Boston College, it’ll get a well-deserved bye week before its final two games of the regular season.Letters to the Editor —Three Cheers for polite kids, Jerry Jones’ generosity, sports fansLia Assimakopoulos covers the Dallas Stars, SMU and college sports for The Dallas Morning News.
