Wilfred Oldham, 99, was delighted after his family and a local housing association surprised him
Wilfred Oldham, who served for Britain in the Airborne Forces, mentioned to relatives he wanted to restore his Lancashire bungalow ahead of his centenary on August 28. The veteran, who fought in the Battle of Arnham, became the oldest person to be recognised in the Queen’s New Year’s Honours list when he was awarded an MBE for commemorations and UK/Dutch relations in the Diplomatic Service and Overseas this year.He has been unable to formally accept his MBE, with the ceremony indefinitely postponed by the coronavirus crisis.
