The Frontier supercomputer is equipped with 9,408 AMD EPYC processors and 37,632 AMD Instinct MI250X accelerators.

Ansys, a leading simulation software company, recently leveraged its Fluent software to stimulate a higher complex turbine system for Baker Hughes, an energy technology company. The experiment was carried out to test the next-generation gas turbines aimed at increasing efficiency.

The simulation saw a remarkable decrease in the amount of time required for completion. Earlier, it took 38.5 hours to complete on 3,700 CPU cores. However, by using 1,024 AMD instinct MI250X accelerators and the AMD EPYC CPUs in Frontier, this time was slashed to 1.5 hours. That marks a completion speed 25 times faster than the previous numbers.By shifting the workload from traditional CPU cores to AMD Instinct GPUs, Ansys was able to reduce simulation time by an impressive 96 percent. The company sees this as a major step forward in accelerating computational fluid dynamics workloads.More on Frontier supercomputerWith this experiment, Frontier became the first supercomputer to reach the exascale-class performance. It runs on AMD Epyc and Instinct CPUs and GPUs respectively. These have gained traction amidst Nvidia’s attempts to monopolize the data center GPU market. Ansys and Baker Hughes used the supercomputer’s enormous processing power for this experiment. As a result, the supercomputer was able to pull off a 2.2-billion-cell axial turbine stator simulation that helped understand the flow and turbulence structures.Frontier, once the world’s fastest supercomputer, was the first to achieve exascale performance. It succeeded the Summit supercomputer, which was officially decommissioned in November 2024. Around the same time, Frontier’s speed record was surpassed by the El Capitan supercomputer at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory. Both systems are powered by AMD GPUs—Frontier is equipped with 9,408 AMD EPYC processors and 37,632 AMD Instinct MI250X accelerators, while El Capitan features 44,544 of the newer AMD Instinct MI300A accelerators. The ImpactGiven the success with this simulation, Ansys has hailed AMD’s Instinct GPUs for cutting the simulation time. According to the company, this milestone could dramatically speed up the design iterations and deliver more accurate performance forecasts for industrial systems. Ansys also sees GPU-based setups as a massive opportunity for small and mid-sized businesses. Even without the massive HPC systems, these businesses have the potential to mark significant gains in simulation efficiency and scalability. According to Ansys, businesses can accelerate complex CFD workloads without needing large-scale infrastructure by running Fluent on GPU systems. “By scaling high-fidelity CFD simulation software to unprecedented levels with the power of AMD Instinct GPUs, this collaboration demonstrates how cutting-edge supercomputing can solve some of the toughest engineering challenges, enabling breakthroughs in efficiency, sustainability, and innovation,” said Brad McCredie, AMD Senior Vice President for Data Center Engineering.Currently, Baker Hughes is utilizing the Ansys Fluent GPU solver on the Frontier supercomputer to enhance the development of its next-generation turbine engines. Ansys believes that the powerful combination of modern GPUs and advanced CFD software has the potential to transform a wide range of complex design and industrial applications.
