The Russian floating nuclear power plant commissioned in 2020 has generated over a billion kWh of energy, producing both heat and electricity.

The Akademik Lomonosov, a floating nuclear power plant operational since May 2020 in the Russian Arctic region of Chukotka, has generated its first billion kilowatt-hours of energy, the state atomic energy corporation, Rosatom, said in a press release. Operational for over five years, the nuclear power plant also recently completed its first fuel cycle. Nuclear energy has its detractors.

Originally planned for deployment at the Sevmash shipyard in the Russian Northwest, the vessel was then moved to Pevek in the Far East to replace the Bilibino Nuclear Power Plant, which was nearing the end of its service life. 1 billion kWhUsing low-enriched uranium fuel, the power plant supplied 20 percent of the region’s demand back in 2020. Today, its share in the Chaun-Bilibino power hub and isolated grid is over 60 percent.
