Newly discovered CP violation in baryons offers new insights into the fundamental asymmetry between matter and antimatter.

Scientists at CERN ’s Large Hadron Collider have for the first time observed a fundamental asymmetry in the behavior of baryons, the particles that form the bulk of all visible matter. The finding provides evidence in the effort to understand a key puzzle in physics: why the universe is dominated by matter. This asymmetry, known as charge-parity violation, shows that the laws of physics treat matter and its antimatter counterpart differently.

An extensive processThe finding resulted from the analysis of approximately 80,000 particle decay events recorded between 2011 and 2018. A team of physicists focused on the lambda-beauty baryon, or Λb, and its antimatter version. “The reason why it took longer to observe CP violation in baryons than in mesons is down to the size of the effect and the available data,” explained LHCb spokesperson Vincenzo Vagnoni.
