CATL opens the world’s largest energy storage testbed to cut grid-connection delays and improve battery safety.

Chinese battery giant CATL opened a massive new energy storage testing facility on Thursday. The goal is to address major challenges in the power sector, such as delays in grid connection and storage systems that do not perform as expected.

According to the company, its new Xiamen Energy Storage Validation Research Institute is now the world’s largest single-site testing and validation facility for energy storage technologies. The facility is in Xiamen, China, and spans almost 25 acres. It invested about $440 million in the project. The firm stated that the platform will help energy storage developers demonstrate how their systems perform, make them safer, and reduce long project delays before they are used in real-world settings.

This launch comes at a time when countries are adding more renewable power than ever before. Solar and wind projects need large battery storage to keep electricity supplies steady, but many of these systems do not meet performance expectations after they are connected to the grid.stations globally are underperforming. The company also said that 46.5% of energy storage systems experience grid connection delays of over two months. These problems make it hard for developers and investors to predict financial outcomes.

Storage systems are supposed to work for years under tough conditions, but many projects lack proof that they will last before they are put into use. If the actual operating life cannot be reliably proven, it will be difficult for investors to build dependable financial models. At the same time, insurers cannot set accurate prices for risk, and customers cannot judge the long-term value of these systems.

The battery giant believes the new testing platform can help solve these problems by checking how systems work in real conditions before they are installed. The company explained that this method tests entire stations, not just individualThe ESVL facility has five main laboratories that can recreate difficult operating environments. CATL said the platform can simulate real grid conditions, extreme weather, high-voltage failures, and large fires.

One of the main features of the facility is what it describes as the world’s first station-level grid integration laboratory. It has a 100 MVA grid simulator that can test over 10 large storage containers at once. The company stated that the simulator is 14 times bigger than a similar platform at the U.S. National Renewable Energy Laboratory. It expects this system to reduce the lengthy on-site setup work that often delays commercial projects.

The research center also houses a thermal safety and combustion lab with over 3.5 million cubic feet of indoor testing space. Engineers can run live-fire and explosion protection tests on nine large energy storage containers at the same time. The firm said the data collected from these tests will help improve equipment design and determine safer spacing requirements for large storage installations.

“Scientific rigor is more critical than ever as the energy storage industry enters the gigawatt era,” said Wu Kai, chief scientist of CATL. “The industry must raise quality standards to the station level and bring the validation process forward to the pre-delivery stage. ” According to Chen Xiaobo, head of ESVL, the platform is open to companies from all over the global energy storage industry.

CATLthe institute is already working with certification bodies such as TÜV SÜD and TÜV Rheinland to offer internationally recognized testing services. Meanwhile, the Chinese battery firm is still one of the world’s leading battery makers. The company reported selling 121 GWh of energy storage batteries in 2025 and has kept a 30.4% global market share for five years in a row.
