French defense major Thales has joined forces with US aerospace startup Skydweller Aero to deploy an solar-powered aerial drone.

In a bid to redefine long-range maritime surveillance and strategic overwatch, French defense electronics major Thales has joined forces with US aerospace startup Skydweller Aero to deploy an autonomous, solar-powered aerial system capable of persistent flight measured in weeks to months.

The unmanned platform, known as MAPS , integrates advanced radar and AI technologies with extreme endurance to deliver uninterrupted maritime domain awareness.Solar drone with Boeing 747 wingspanSkydweller has developed a unique solar-powered drone. This drone has a wingspan larger than a Boeing 747 and can carry payloads of up to 881 pounds .This significantly improved over previous solar UAVs, which had limited use because they couldn’t carry heavy loads.Operating at medium altitudes and without carbon emissions, the aircraft enables near-permanent surveillance of vast maritime expanses, including Exclusive Economic Zones , shipping lanes, and contested maritime regions. The strategic enhancement comes from Thales’ integration of its AirMaster S radar, a lightweight, AI-enabled sensor suite originally developed for manned maritime patrol aircraft such as the ATL2. Operating in an X-band with Active Electronically Scanned Array technology, AirMaster S offers rapid situational awareness across air, land, and sea domains. Its AI-driven data processing enables onboard target classification, dramatically reducing data loads sent to ground control and enabling efficient bandwidth use, which is critical for long-duration autonomous missions. This AI-radar pairing with Skydweller’s zero-emission UAV creates a fully autonomous, persistent ISR platform capable of monitoring high-interest zones in the Mediterranean, Indo-Pacific, or Atlantic approaches. According to Thales executives, this capability will complement existing ISR assets such as satellites, manned aircraft, and conventional drones, providing NATO, EU, and Western-aligned forces with new operational flexibility in areas demanding constant presence.Month-long flightsCritically, the AirMaster S radar system includes auto-tuning features that dynamically adapt to changing mission profiles and environmental conditions. This level of autonomous adaptation enhances the drone’s capacity to loiter over regions of interest for extended periods, without returning to base or requiring costly ground intervention.Thales’ Sébastien Renouard, Chief Commercial Officer for EMEA, said, “The combination of Thales’ AirMaster S Smart Radar with the MAPS Skydweller changes the paradigm for surveillance missions. It delivers a sovereign, autonomous solution to persistent ISR challenges across maritime and littoral theatres.”Skydweller’s aircraft are constructed from lightweight carbon fiber and powered entirely by solar panels, with no fossil fuels or traditional refueling infrastructure requirement. According to the company, the platform can monitor entire ocean regions, track illegal trafficking, conduct anti-piracy operations, or provide ISR overwatch during grey-zone conflicts at a fraction of the operational cost of traditional aircraft. The development also signals growing transatlantic cooperation in dual-use aerospace technologies. Skydweller Aero, based in Oklahoma City and having European operations in Spain, is backed by venture capital and private equity. The firm was originally spun off from the Solar Impulse program and has since focused on building high-endurance ISR platforms for military and commercial markets. As global tensions rise in contested maritime regions, from the South China Sea to the Eastern Mediterranean, persistent, AI-enabled ISR platforms such as MAPS-Skydweller may prove pivotal in maintaining deterrence, enforcing sovereignty, and enabling preemptive domain awareness in real-time.
