Scientists are developing NoMAD, a portable particle accelerator, which will be able to analyze rock art without damage.
This cutting-edge technology allows for the non-invasive study of rock art and other fragile artifacts directly on site, eliminating the need to remove and transport samples for analysis.An ongoing innovative project aims to revolutionize the study and preservation of cultural heritage. Known as NoMAD , the project aims to develop the world’s first portable particle accelerator .
The project, funded by UKRI, brings together archaeologists from the University of Exeter and the Ashmolean Museum in Oxford with physicists from the University of Liverpool and ANSTO . Rock art provides invaluable insights into the lives and beliefs of ancient cultures. Often predating written language by thousands of years, these paintings represent some of the earliest forms of human expression.
