Japan is set to revolutionize clean energy with a world-first hydrogen production facility powered by its advanced nuclear reactor.
Japan is gearing up to build the world’s first hydrogen production facility powered by a next-generation nuclear reactor .For this project, the Japan Atomic Energy Agency will use its advanced High Temperature Gas Cooled Reactor .The agency aims to harness the immense heat generated by the High Temperature Gas Cooled Reactor to produce hydrogen without emitting carbon dioxide.
The excess heat from the reactor will be used to drive a thermochemical process known as the sulfur-iodine cycle. This process uses a series of chemical reactions to split water into hydrogen and oxygen, with the HTGR’s heat providing the necessary energy. This method offers a clean and efficient way to produce hydrogen without relying on fossil fuels, contributing significantly to decarbonization efforts.
