British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak has sparked an intense reaction after declaring “we shouldn’t get bullied into believing that people can be any sex they want to be” during a speech at his first party conference as leader.
Sunak — who is looking to rally his ruling Conservatives for next year’s general election — is trying to position his party as a force for change, even after 13 years in power and increasing disaffection among voters.
With next year’s expected general election high on attendees’ minds, Sunak was intent on delivering the message that he represents change — despite more than a decade of Tory governments. Ahead of the 43-year-old former finance minister’s speech, a slick big-screen video montage themed around “change” and how Sunak is “different” left onlookers in little doubt about his imminent message.
Large banners on the hall walls in front of her hammered home the intended message, bearing the conference’s slogan: “long-term decisions for a brighter future”.After his hour-long address, which combined major policy announcements with attacks on the Labour opposition — the overwhelmingly male, suited audience rose for several minutes of applause and cheering.

Catherine King refuses to attend Senate Inquiry into Qatar Airways decisionTransport Minister Catherine King is refusing to appear before the Senate Inquiry into examining the government’s decision to block extra Qatar Airways flights from coming into Australia. “It is highly unusual for House of Representatives Ministers to appear before Senate inquiries,” Sky News Political Editor Andrew Clennell said. “But the Prime Minister was wrong this morning to say it never happened,' he said. Mr Clennell stated former prime minister Scott Morrison appeared before the senate in 2014 when he was immigration minister to speak about the government’s boat turnback policy and Labor minister Ross Free also appeared before the senate in 1992. Clennell’s comments come as Prime Minister Anthony Albanese on Wednesday said “no House of Representatives member has ever appeared before a Senate inquiry, this is a stunt”.
