Colorfully decorated blue barrels lined East Beach Park in Galveston on Saturday morning as visitors were treated to an art competition and various workshops during the fourth annual celebration of the World Ocean Day Festival.

After the students paint the barrels, Artist Boat volunteers pick them up toward the end of May in preparation for the event, Klay added. In April, approximately 11,976 pounds of trash were removed from a 12-mile stretch on Galveston Island, according to the Texas General Land Office. The removal was part of a larger action that removed over 50,000 pounds of trash from around Texas coastlines.
“We are hoping up to 1,000 people will stop by today, but I’ll be happy with a couple hundred,” she said. One of his goals in being at the event was to inspire youth to understand the environmental impact humans have in places such as the ocean and how those impacts affect us all.
