Scottie Scheffler wins the Masters. It is the first major championship for the 25-year-old, who is the world's No. 1-ranked golfer
Cameron Smith, who was three shots behind his playing partner entering Sunday’s round, quickly shaved two strokes off his deficit with birdies on his first two holes. But Scheffler steadied himself with a chip-in birdie at No. 3, and his lead remained three strokes as the pair reached the midpoint of Amen Corner, the water-fronted par-3 12th hole.
Smith crumpled, hitting his tee shot into Rae’s Creek and carding a triple-bogey 6. The disastrous result clearly unnerved the 28-year-old Australian, and he wasn’t a factor the rest of the day, ending up in a tie for third with Shane Lowry, seven strokes back.“It’s just unfortunate, but I’ll grow from this and be stronger for it,” Smith said afterward. “I feel like I’ve played some of my best golf around here, it hasn’t been my time yet.
Scheffler was, as usual, unflappable. A bogey at No. 10, the hole where past Masters collapses usually have taken root, was followed by three Amen Corner pars. By that point, his closest competitor was McIlroy, whose 64 tied the Masters record for lowest final round and whose 18th-hole blast out of the sand for birdie sent the patrons into histrionics that could be heard clearly a few holes away, where Scheffler and Smith were playing.
Scheffler’s response to that jolt of competitor-generated joyful noise: birdies at 14 and 15, which more or less ended the dramatic portion of the proceedings. Scheffler joined Arnold Palmer in 1960 as the only golfers to have their fourth win of the season be at the Masters, and his name will now be right near Palmer’s and all the other greats on the Masters trophy.
