She warned that cutting-edge developments in the sector posed risks because they could be manipulated by bad actors or spiral out of control, with unpredictable consequences some experts fear could result in the extinction of humanity at the hands of ultra-intelligent machines. “This offers huge opportunities and it would be the wrong approach to say that the risks are too grave to not lean into the opportunities.

“What a company would do is they would have a kind of risk assessment and they would monitor what is happening and at a certain point they would have to step in and take action,” Ms Donelan said.
