United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres addresses the 78th Session of the U.N. General Assembly in New York City, U.S., September 19, 2023. - REUTERSPIX: More than 150 world leaders are gathering here as the 78th Session of the United Nations General Assembly kicked off on Tuesday without leaders of four of the five permanent members of the UN Security Council .
In his speech, the US President, the only leader of the permanent members of UNSC in attendance here, urged the rest of the world to stand up to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. Besides State and Government Leaders, hundreds of representatives from the various UN agencies and civil society organisations are taking part in dozens of events scheduled throughout the week.
Commenting on the absence of the four high-profile leaders, UN Secretary-General António Guterres said that he cares less about who comes to New York and more about what gets done, especially to revive the lagging SDGs.
