It's estimated there are between 800,000 and possibly more than 2 million people being held in Chinese detention camps.

While some in the U.S. and Israel protested the appropriateness of using a term so commonly associated with the atrocities of World War II, there seemed to be little complaint when the Department of Defense used this same phrase to describe detention camps in China earlier this year.

For those who have fallen afoul of these arbitrary rules⁠—which also bans traveling or speaking to loved ones overseas⁠—re-education camps awaited. It has been estimated there are at least 800,000 to more than 2 million people being detained. The U.S. government was so concerned about the Xinjiang situation, the State Department devoted a special section of its annual Report on International Religious Freedom, released last week, to the issue.

The White House and the State Department did not immediately respond to requests for comment on the matter.this week imagining what a conversation between the two leaders on their detention facilities would be like:"Xi might argue that his camps are cleaner , and he doesn't put children in cages. But, Trump might counter, he's only thrown a few thousand Latin American asylum seekers in his prison-like facilities on the US southern border.
