As the World Cup gets underway, cybersecurity experts and federal authorities are warning fans to be on alert for ticket scams as criminals look to capitalize on last-minute demand.
With reports of thousands of unsold tickets and prices dropping for some matches, experts say scammers are using deeply discounted offers to lure fans into handing over money and personal information. The FBI has warned that cybercriminals are already creating fake websites that closely mimic FIFA's official ticketing platform. Some fraudulent domains differ from legitimate websites by only a few characters, making them difficult to spot.
"When fans see a ticket that was once selling for hundreds of dollars suddenly offered for a fraction of the price, a scam can look like a deal," experts warn. Fake discount offers that advertise steeply reduced ticket prices. Malicious QR codes that direct users to fraudulent sites. Urgent messages pressuring fans to act immediately.
Authorities recommend purchasing tickets only through official FIFA channels and typing website addresses directly into a browser rather than clicking links in advertisements, text messages, emails, or social media posts. Experts also caution against paying with cryptocurrency, wire transfers, gift cards, Venmo, or Zelle, as those payment methods offer little or no fraud protection. Credit cards generally provide stronger consumer protections and chargeback options if a transaction turns out to be fraudulent.
Fans should also be wary of anyone offering paper tickets, screenshots, or emailed QR codes. Officials note that legitimate World Cup tickets are delivered through FIFA's official ticketing system and mobile app. Anyone who suspects they have encountered a ticket scam is encouraged to report it to the FBI's Internet Crime Complaint Center and their financial institution immediately.
