The biggest World Cup of all time is nearing its end, as the final match will be a battle between two of the biggest soccer powers in the world.

Argentina is trying to make history as a repeat champion, while Spain is looking to win a title after going through a gauntlet of European soccer powersThe biggest World Cup of all time is nearing its end, as the final match will be a battle between two of the biggest soccer powers in the world.

Spain had already punched their ticket into the final on Tuesday when they defeated France in Dallas, and now they know their opponent after a dramatic showdown between England and Argentina on Wednesday. England had seized the early lead in that game, but Argentina kept their hopes of a repeat title win alive as they secured a 2-1 win in Atlanta. How did Spain get to the World Cup Final?

Spain’s journey to the World Cup Final started with a 2-0-1 performance in group play, with a scoreless draw against Cabo Verde kicking things off. They rebounded nicely with wins over Saudi Arabia and Uruguay to capture their group, and since then they’ve been showcasing their mettle against some of Europe’s best teams.

That march has included wins over bitter rival Portugal and a hard-fought win over Belgium, but their coming out party may have been a 2-0 win over France on Tuesday, as the Spanish squad kept one of the best attacking offenses in the world at bay for 90 dazzling minutes. Argentina’s road to the World Cup Final has been a fascinating one, and they’ve really had to earn it, capturing two wins in extra time during the knockout stages of the tournament, including a 3-1 win over Switzerland in the quarterfinals.

Their semifinal match against England was yet another tough battle, as they trailed England 1-0 in the late stages of the game. In the blink of an eye, Enzo Fernández scored in the 85th minute to tie the game, and Lautaro Martínez delivered a stunning blow in stoppage time to give Argentina a 2-1 win and to deny England the shot at erasing their 60-year World Cup drought.

Like Spain, they also had to tangle with Cabo Verde in the tournament, but unlike Spain they were able to prevail, scoring a 3-2 win in Miami in extra time against the upstart squad. Argentina will appear in their staggering seventh World Cup Final on Sunday, tying them for second with Brazil in terms of the number of times they’ve played for the top prize in the game.

Only Germany has reached more Finals than Argentina, having been there eight times. If Argentina can win, they would become just the fourth country to win four or more World Cup titles, with Brazil having the most titles at five. Argentina is also trying to become the third country to win back-to-back World Cup titles, a feat that hasn’t been achieved since Brazil won the title in 1958 and 1962. Italy also won back-to-back titles in 1934 and 1938.

Spain has indeed won the World Cup, capturing the prize in the 2010 edition of the tournament in South Africa. The World Cup Final between Argentina and Spain will take place on Sunday, with kickoff set for 2 p.m. Central time at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey.
