Expectations are a privilege. It follows then that, strange as it sounds, disappointment is a privilege as well. If they were with us today, our forebears in this struggle would remind us that it could always be worse. There could be no expectations at all, writes Eric Foster in his column today.

After carefully processing his feelings of anger, frustration and disappointment with the 2024 presidential election outcome, columnist Eric Foster came to some unexpectedly positive realizations. ATLANTA -- Last week, as I watched the presidential election results roll in, and it became apparent that Donald Trump was going to win, I made a decision. I said to myself that I would not run to social media to read everyone’s opinions.

Angry at the inconsistent principles. Angry that the party of law and order, the party that bills itself as tough on crime, the party that desires mass incarceration and deportation of illegal immigrants, men, women, and children, they have committed a crime, itself chose a criminal as its leader.

Angry that, as always, the influence of race and gender will be minimized or dismissed. It never ceases to amaze me that a country that — not too long ago — found race so important, so central to the American experience, that it required separate “colored” water fountains now tells itself that race plays no role in who it chooses at its leader. A country that — not too long ago — barred women from voting.

Strangely enough, I had expectations. Despite all the evidence to the contrary, some part of me still expected that most Americans would rebuke Donald Trump. Some part of me held onto the belief that Americans knew in their hearts that they could do better than him. That despite whatever flaws one could see in Kamala Harris, they would not be found to outweigh Trump’s. We saw what he did with power. And we chose not to give it to him again in 2020.
