JOHANNESBURG - Casual workers at Pikitup are staging a protest over employment contracts outside the Randburg depot on Thursday afternoon.
Workers here claim to be overlooked during the recruitment process of permanent employees, despite being contracted with Pikitup for half a decade. Garbage Trucks are not being used to pick up trash anymore but instead transporting workers from the depot, home after their shifts. The group of mostly casual workers gathered outside the entity’s Randburg depot said they had no interest in disrupting the day-to-day operations but refuse collection in some parts of the metro had come to a standstill.
The leader of the protest group, Combat Enos Maake, has called on other depots to join in on the ongoing demonstrations. "We know that there are other depots with similar protests. We are encouraging them to continue the great work, we cannot allow you to be overlooked by strippers and mistresses of councillors." Exasperated casual workers at PikItUp are staging a demonstration outside the entity’s Randburg Depot - disrupting operations.
