The head of the company that demolished part of the historic Fifth Ward Church said it was done on orders of the owner.

The Salt Lake City planning director is investigating after a registered historic building was partially demolished on March 31, 2024. Jordan Atkin is the owner of the building and property.

According to Christensen, Atkin had showed him some papers from the state and never indicated to him that he didn't have the required city permits to begin demolition.Salt Lake City officials have given more clarity about the kinds of fines the owner could face for the unpermitted demolition. "It’s also very unfortunate that people are breaking the rules," Paulsen said. "It hit a personal note for me."Jacob Rueda said he remembers visiting it when it was Club Sanctuary shortly after Sept. 11, 2001, crying with a group of friends about the day's tragedy.Along with his sadness, there is anger.“If they actually had any experience, they would know the rules and they would know better," Paulsen said.“Old buildings do have hazardous materials.
