The Pike County Commission says a full assessment is underway after flooding damaged the new county judicial complex.
) - But the issue may have been more than just a case of frozen pipes bursting.
The commission office said workers with Alabama Restoration were at the complex Wednesday and Thursday doing a full assessment of what needs to be taken out and to finish drying processes. “We did confirm that all the damage was due to an issue with the water circulation system for the heating and cooling system,” said Jordan Cox, with the commission office. “There were at least 5 gaskets that failed.” New gaskets have been ordered.
Cox said the commission is working with the HVAC company to figure out why the gaskets failed so that all repairs can be made before the system can be turned back on.Pike County Sheriff Russell Thomas said the flooding started on the third floor and water made its way to the ground floor. There was initially concern that legal documents connected to cases or investigations may have been damaged, but it appears that issue will be minimal since most paperwork was in plastic sleeves.
Thomas also confirmed that the freezer at the county jail failed, affecting thousands of dollars worth of food purchased to feed inmates. The sheriff said the affected food is part of resources they had on standby and that inmates are still being fed.
