Image of the St. Joseph's Catholic School Halloween parade float that made its way through Hanover on Thursday. An individual identifying themselves as the designer of a parade float that shocked people across the country is now sharing his intention behind the imagery.

Galen Shelly had commented on the original post that sparked backlash, after a photo showed the St. Joseph's Catholic School Halloween parade float depicting a "a replica of the Auschwitz Concentration Camp gate."The words on the gate read "Arbeit Macht Frei"—a German phrase commonly used at Nazi concentration camps, meaning "work makes you free." But in the lengthy explanation Shelly provided, he said the reason behind the gate was not "ill intent." I was saddened to see the conversation drifting with such certainty so far off the point I had intended to make.Shelly said the theme of the float was supposed to be "none of us make it out alive." It's miraculous nature, a nod to the way time marches on and carries us through all the phases, and how despite our best efforts; all of us who pass this way face the same fate, when it is our time. However, Shelly did acknowledge the scrutiny the float has received, saying "words do matter, and sometimes the same words can be used for both good and bad." In that I have erred and will gladly offer this apology for not realizing there were other ways to interpret a part, especially without knowledge of the whole. My thoughts simply did not go "there" and as you can imagine I was horrified to find that I have offended anyone much less put those closest to me in jeopardy and caused St Joseph's to come into question at my fumbled effort to make a positive spiritual message out of a float for them. Since photos of the float surfaced online, Harrisburg Bishop Timothy Senior denounced the imagery, saying it was "appalling." The inclusion of this image—one that represents the horrific suffering and murder of millions of innocent people, including six million Jews during the Holocaust—is profoundly offensive and unacceptable. These acts, intentional or not, cause fear and pain for Jewish individuals and all who understand the weight of these symbols. We appreciate Bishop Senior’s acknowledgment of the harm caused and his apology on behalf of the Diocese. Recognizing the impact of such imagery is a vital step toward understanding, healing, and preventing similar incidents in the future.A Catholic school in York County came under fire for including "a replica of the Auschwitz Concentration Camp gate" in its Halloween parade float.Police have filed charges against a man who allegedly caused a hospital's emergency room to go on lockdown after threatening and pushing staff.A Lebanon County father is emphasizing the importance of checking your child's Halloween candy after his son made an alarming discovery.- An Indiana County man will spend up to three years in state prison for stealing thousands of dollars of packages while delivering for DoorDash.A
