Woodlands cheerleaders shooting: Community supports Payton Washington
, 18, after a practice around 12:15 a.m. Tuesday in H-E-B parking lot in Elgin, according to authorities.
Doctors removed Washington's spleen, and bullets also damaged her diaphragm and pancreas, Woodlands Elite owner Lynne Shearer said. “They're all going a bit of shock right now, and we're just trying to keep them focused on tonight,” Shearer said. “They’re highly competitive, they want to compete, and we will start dealing with the repercussions of their trauma next week.”
Washington is"a standout performer," Shearer said. She's a three-time Worlds silver medalist, 10-time National Cheerleading Association champion and four-time Majors champion. “She’s been a powerhouse since she was a little kid.” Washington not only survived, but she thrived. Doctors suggested she join a sport to help strengthen her remaining lung, which is how she became a cheerleader. At the gymnastics gym she joined, Washington said the cheerleaders"just looked so happy. I was so drawn to it," she said in the video.
A Worlds gold medal is the only title Washington hasn’t won, and Shearer said the girls have a new motivation to win.
