The Thundering Herd rolled over Cinderella Riverside in the opening round of the Group 1 playoffs.
Updated: Oct. 28, 2023, 4:07 p.m.Ibn Muhammad of Woodbury finds running room during the second quarter of the Gloucester vs. Woodbury football game at Woodbury High School in Woodbury, Saturday, Sept. 30, 2023.The Riverside High School football team took the field Saturday morning for its first playoff game in 20 years.
Woodbury won the first-round game, 40-8, despite not running an offensive play in the second half. Marquis Taylor returned the second-half kickoff 70 yards for a score, Wilson Torres brought a punt back 94 yards and Ibn Muhammad scored on a 31-yard pick-six after the break to increase a 20-0 halftime lead to 40-0.
Said quarterback Jayden Johnson: “I was bored. I was a kicker in the second half, but it was good. As long as my team is winning, I’m happy.” So after coming into Saturday’s playoff game with 18 catches for 290 yards and two touchdowns, Muhammad hauled in four catches for a career-high 144 yards and two touchdowns while scoring a third time on the interception return and recovering a fumble.
The Thundering Herd were without standout running back Anthony Reagan Jr., who his father said was simply given a rest day to deal with some nagging soreness and be fresh for the playoff run ahead. There was a contingency plan if the game hung in the balance in the second half. “They played a lot of man,” said Johnson. “I felt my receivers were better than their defensive backs and if I got them the ball, they would make some plays. I definitely think it took me a couple games to get it going, but I’m settled in at quarterback now.”Riverside moved the football but ran just one offensive play that gained more than 10 yards and penalties and other negative plays sunk drives. John Boston went over 1,000 yards on the season, rushing 27 times for 136 yards.
