Despite the tensions, Senator Farrell maintained the conference had been a"terrific few days", insisting it provided an important opportunity for Australia to grow trade relations with other ASEAN nations. Senator Farrell also defended ASIO boss Mike Burgess, who's revelation an ex-politician had"sold out" Australia to foreign agents sparked the fight over Chinese relations, claiming the spy chief's comments would not alter the government's efforts to stabilise ties.
