'This is a wonderful surprise'
Veterans Housing announced that Dorothy Steel, who has been a tenant with the organisation for seven decades, won’t have to pay a penny of rent from now on following the special anniversary.
Dorothy first moved to Glasgow with her husband who was in the Glasgow Highlanders, which is part of the Highland Light Infantry. To mark the anniversary, her son David attended a reception with Veterans Minister Graeme Dey and VHS Chairman, group caption Bob Kemp, to collect a certificate.David said: “This is a wonderful surprise; my mum will be thrilled!
“She loves her home and the support she receives from neighbours and, of course, Veterans Housing Scotland.” Bob Kemp said: “When we discovered that Dorothy had been a tenant for 70 years, is in her 100 years, and learned her story we were keen to acknowledge both her tenancy and her husband’s contribution.“As a charity which has supported disabled veterans in Scotland since 1915, we are proud to boast such wonderful tenants as Dorothy as we continue to provide homes for today’s veterans.”
