Want women to advance in the business world? Here's one thing women can do, and one thing for men, too.

When Debby Carreau was a rising star at a Canadian food company, the CEO took her under his wing. They’d go out to dinner together when he came to visit her office. She asked him for advice, until, one day, he asked: “Why do you need my advice for that?”The situation she was dealing with was causing her stress, but no matter what happened, she was confident that she could deal with the consequences; the worst thing that happened could not derail the career she had built.

There are two ingredients for success, she argues: Competence and confidence. Women already tend to put their heads down and get very competent. Because the steps aren’t prescribed for us, women develop a ton of courage, which is the stand-in for confidence. I think of Danaris Mazara, a baker in Lawrence, Mass. that I’ve written about in, who started her business with $37 in food stamps. Midway through the pandemic, she spoke about facing her fear. She was well-practiced in doing so.

The practical advice for women is two-pronged. If you enter a mentor/protégé relationship, make sure it doesn’t turn into a mansplaining or ego-stroking exercise.
