The gender gap in faculty attrition worsens after tenure, according to a new study
When biogeochemist Rebecca Barnes landed a tenure-track position at Colorado College, she thought it was her dream job. And she seemed to excel in the role. She received multiple large grants from the National Science Foundation , including a prestigious CAREER grant—in all, more than $8 million in funding She published 15 papers in 2019 alone, the year before she was awarded tenure. “I remember thinking, ‘I’m doing all the things right. I’m achieving.
. A follow-up survey of 10,000 of these researchers revealed that most left—or would leave—because they felt “pushed” out of academia rather than “pulled” toward a better opportunity, and this is especially true for women. The gender gap also increased with seniority: Women full professors are 19% more likely than men at the same career stage to leave academia, as compared with 6% for women assistant professors and 10% for associates.
The paper takes a big-picture view rare in the literature, notes first author Katie Spoon, a computational social science graduate student at the University of Colorado, Boulder. “It’s really hard to identify faculty who have left academia, so a lot of studies have had to look at a very specific population—so the literature is very deep, but narrow,” she says, which has led to confusing and sometimes conflicting results. So, Spoon and colleagues tapped into a relatively recent resource: theU.S.
It makes sense that workplace experiences would play a large role in a person’s decision to leave academia, agrees University of Kansas economist Donna Ginther, who studies the academic workforce. Being a tenured faculty member “is like having an arranged marriage with 20 other people,” she says. “Sometimes you get along, and sometimes you don’t. And if the climate it not supportive of you, you might get a little frustrated.
