A record number of women (11%) directed the top 100 films in 2019 compared to past years:
Out of the 113 directors who worked on the top 100 movies of 2019, 12 directors were women, according to a study by the USC Annenberg Inclusion Initiative at the University of Southern California. In other words, for every one female director, there are at least eight male directors.
Following gender inequality in directorship across the top 100 movies, the study found there are is also a gender gap in awards across the Golden Globes, DGA Awards, Academy Awards and Critics’ Choice. On the screen, there are also gaps in representation. Between 2007 and 2018, the amount of female speaking characters on screen fluctuated around 30%, another USC Annenbergfound. Thus, while female directorship recently peaked, the amount of female speaking characters has remained relatively the same.
As with female directors, there are discrepancies in on-screen representation of women across race. In 2018, the Annenberg study found 33 of 100 top films had no Black or African American females, 54 had no Asian or Asian American females and 70 had no Latinas.
