The Horizon Prison Initiative at the Ohio Reformatory for Women celebrates the graduation of women who have completed a 10-month multi-faith transformative program as part of their incarceration and eventual community re-entry. The women narrate, dance and sing an original story written by one of the participants. June 13, 2024 Family and friends gather, quietly chatting with each other, checking the program and looking for names for the special program about to begin.

Now, 9 years later, Jess is leading her community inside the Ohio Reformatory for Women, as the playwright for the day’s performance. “I have learned how to be a better mother, a better woman, a better friend,” says Crystal Bruce, who plays the part of ‘Snow White.’ “I’ve learned how to communicate better.”leave the reformatory with, not only housing but most often employment as well, as part of coordinated efforts with ReEntry organizations, like ARCH.

For 20 years, the Horizon Prison Initiative https://www.horizonprisoninitiative.org/our-work has been changing lives, part of programming for correctional facilities with both men and women in Ohio. According to program organizers, Horizon participants have lower rates of recidivism, compared to the statewide average of 27%, to just 9%.“There is hope for a new day in so many ways – spiritually, personally, professionally - an opportunity for a new day,” Husted says in his remarks.

“I just want to spend my time with my family and be the person that I was always meant to be for them,” said Jess Sari.
