A recent study found that a significant number of women are falling behind on recommended healthcare appointments, including mammograms, gynecological exams, and annual physicals. Anxiety about going to the doctor, cost concerns, and feeling overwhelmed with family responsibilities were cited as the most common reasons for this trend. The study also highlighted gender-specific concerns, such as feeling dismissed by healthcare providers and worries about being judged based on their gender.
Guidelines from the United States Preventive Services Task Force and the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists recommend that women have regular – and, usually, annual – health appointments, such as pap smears, mammogram, and physicals. These appointments serve to examine women’s health overall and to check for and, ideally, catch any potentially adverse health developments, such as cancer, cysts, or infections.
