“Key legislation around domestic violence, bail and the sentencing of offenders, as well as the broadening of the scope of sexual offences and other matters, is currently before Parliament,” he said.
“We also pay tribute to today’s generation of women. Just as the women in 1956 who fought against the injustices of their time, the women of today are engaged in a new struggle. A struggle for equal rights, dignity, economic liberation and freedom from violence,” he said. In August 2018, thousands of women marched to the Union Buildings to highlight the scourge of violence against women and children in the country. A few months later, in November, government, in partnership with various NGOs, held a national gender summit to address gender-based violence.
