The 49-year-old illegally got the pension payments for nearly 10 years.

Sandra VonScheven, 49, received 364 days in county jail but the sentence will be suspended if she completes probation, the state Office of the Attorney General said. She will also have to pay back the money she illegally received.

“This sentence should serve as a warning that we will not allow individuals to enrich themselves at the expense of New Jersey taxpayers and public servants,” Attorney General Matt Platkin said in a statement. “This crime went on for nearly a decade, but it was ultimately detected and the defendant held responsible.”

Sandra VonScheven, of Hamilton, began receiving her husband’s pension in 2001 after he died, officials said. She remarried in January 2010 but didn’t notify the pension board. The spouses of deceased pension recipients are allowed to collect benefits for life unless they get married again, authorities said.
