Akron resident Kathryn Eastgate is one of 1,400 people who is participating in the National Interstate 8k race in Downtown Akron on Saturday. Eastgate, 40, has undergone ankle reconstruction surgery and lost 180 pounds in order to participate in the race, she said.

AKRON, Ohio – More than 1,400 people will take part in the National Interstate 8k race in Downtown Akron on Saturday – the first of three races in the. Among them will be first-time participant Kathryn Eastgate of Akron. Eastgate, 40, has undergone ankle reconstruction surgery and lost 180 pounds in order to participate in the race, she said.

The subsequent death of her father the same year and her limited mobility caused her to turn to food for comfort, she said.Eastgate sustained another ankle injury in 2008 when she stepped off a curb. After that injury, she was finally able to get an MRI to determine the extent of the damage, she said.

She also started walking. First she walked out to her mailbox to get her mail, she said. Then she would walk a couple of steps further. She kept increasing the distance she was walking, and within a couple of months she was able to walk around a block. “I always thought that you had to run these races to be able to do them, but that’s not the case,” she said. “For most races there isn’t a time cutoff.”“The National Interstate 8k is a distinctive event that serves as an excellent training opportunity for those preparing for longer races, while also standing as a significant achievement in its own right,” Akron Marathon Vice President of Operations and Race Director Laura McElrath said.
