Krystin Marchese sobbed uncontrollably as she apologized to the family of Lee Potteiger.

Police said Krystin Marchese told investigators she was in heroin withdrawal, had taken two Xanax that was not prescribed to her and was trying to drive from the Duncannon area to New Cumberland to buy fentanyl when she caused the four-vehicle pileup on Route 11 in East Pennsboro Township.

Lee Potteiger, a father of three and grandfather to five, was described as an avid fisherman and an active member of both the Capital City Bassmasters and his Faith Assembly of God Church in New Cumberland. Tammy Potteiger explained that she hoped that Marchese will use all tools at her disposal to break the cycle of addiction in her family, and also take an active role - whenever she is able - to try to counsel others who are suffering with substance abuse problems.

Cumberland County District Attorney Sean McCormack said afterward that his office and Potteiger’s family were satisfied with the plea because the length of sentence is close to what Marchese might have received under a homicide conviction anyway. The Ford F-250 she was driving then crossed into oncoming traffic and smashed head-on into a Lexus and a Mitsubishi, according to the criminal affidavit.
