Adele said she didn't hesitate to accept when she got the call
A woman said she didn't hesitate to say yes when she took a phone call that would inevitably change her life.
When her great-nephew, now 10, was six months old, Adele obtained a Special Guardianship Order, which gave her full custody of the child. She said in some ways it was a weight off her shoulders, but it meant that she no longer got support from social services, because they no longer had a duty of care for the child.
She fought a two-year battle through the courts to gain custody. She said the court case took a huge toll on her emotionally but she didn't have a choice. She added: "We’re talking about a child from your own family. It’s not like someone’s come off the street and said, ‘this child’s got nobody, we don’t know who the mum and dad are’. It was stressful, but I didn’t have a choice.”
Prior to receiving the Special Guardianship Order, Adele claims she received just £15 per week from local authorities to raise her great-nephew. She currently receives £175 per week, but the cost of living crisis has left her struggling to make ends meet.
