A woman was stabbed to death and four other people shot Sunday night in incidents believed to linked. A search is underway for the suspect – 50-year-old Cortrell Burks.
The ordeal began just before 6:30 p.m. when Jefferson County sheriff’s deputies were dispatched to the 300 block of 20th Avenue N.E. in the Center Point area to conduct a welfare check.
When deputies arrived on the scene, they found a 40-year-old woman dead from stab wounds, said sheriff’s Lt. Joni Money. The killing is believed to be domestic-related. The suspect in the homicide is believed to have then traveled to the 800 block of 48th Street North, inside the city limits of Birmingham, and fired multiple shots into the home.Four people at the Birmingham location were struck by gunfire. Additional details have not been released, but Money said their injuries aren’t believed to be life-threatening.
Investigators are actively searching for Burks. He is described as 6-feet, 2-inches tall and weighs about 250 pounds. He may have a shaved head and a grey beard, Money said.Anyone who sees Burks is asked to call 911 immediately.Anyone with information on either incident is asked to call Crime Stoppers at 205-254-7777.
