Emily Handstock uses TikTok to raise awareness about the debilitating effects of period pain and encourages others to participate in research.
Emily Handstock, 25, has documented her experience with severe period pain for 10 years on TikTok. She wants other women and girls to participate in research on the issue, hoping to improve education, healthcare, and the lives of women in the future. Emily, from Aberdare, Rhondda Cynon Taf, has suffered from agonizing period pain since she was 15. She describes heavy bleeding that forced her to leave school and change frequently.
At times, the pain was so severe she felt like she would pass out. Despite this, she felt society had normalized her experience. She recounts being told to 'just have some ibuprofen and suck it up'. Emily works as a sales manager and says her company has been supportive, allowing her to work from home. She acknowledges the financial burden of taking time off work due to period pain, a concern many sufferers share. A report estimates the economic cost of taking time off for issues like severe period pain or ovarian cysts to be nearly £11 billion a year in England alone
