Carrie Jean Robinette, 46, of San Diego, has always had a lot of health issues, but she didn’t think she had a serious problem until muscle spasms overtook her body when she was traveling in 2023. The random episode triggered a cascade of medical appointments that led her to one possible answer: stiff person syndrome , a rare neurological disorder that causes muscle stiffness and painful spasms.
I kept seeing more specialists, but it wasn’t until I met with a rheumatologist and had a muscle spasm while sitting in front of him that I got more confirmation that this disease might be the cause. The doctor turned to my husband and said, “I know exactly what this is. It’s SPS.” Because it’s such a rare and complex disease, it can take years, even decades, to be 100% certain it’s not something else.
