Like many people with a freckle in the back of their eye, Debbie Hensley never knew she had one — until it potentially threatened her life. The retired teacher went in for a routine eye exam in October 2023 feeling something wasn’t quite right with her left eye. It wasn’t a big deal, she says, but her vision was a bit unclear so she wondered if it might be a cataract.
About 1,700 people are diagnosed in the U.S. each year. “Melanoma is a life-threatening condition,” Bowen says. It can spread to other parts of the body, usually the liver, but tests showed Hensley didn’t have any metastases. The grandmother began to focus on her treatment. “I thought, OK, here we go. What do we have to do first?” she recalls. “My motto became: List each next step and do it… After that, I really wasn’t scared.
