Kate Kilgore from Co Down will be participating in the Dublin City Marathon to raise funds for Marie Curie in memory of her grandpa, who was cared for by the team's nurses earlier this year.
A Co Down woman will be pounding the pavements of Dublin this Sunday for a cause very dear to her heart.
"My grandpa's GP was amazing as were the district nurses, who saw him regularly anyway but Marie Curie made a big difference. It's a fabulous charity that provides care and support to people with any terminal illness, and their families. Kate, who also works in the medical profession, added: "They were worth their weight in gold with their clinical expertise, kindness and helping to maintain dignity in a time of difficulty. They really are absolute angels!
"My brother and I were his only grandchildren so he was very devoted and always wanted to know how we did in school or know the result of a hockey match. He was very involved and took a great interest in everything we did - just amazing." "I only started training in May and did a 5K run which nearly killed me. I really struggled at the start but then got into a rhythm and religiously stuck to a training plan.
It will be his fifth marathon run in aid of Marie Curie and will add to the £20,000 he has already raised.
