A 42-year-old woman was pulled alive from the rubble of a building almost 222 hours after a devastating earthquake struck Turkey and Syria
Little aid has been arriving in the area, due to deep divisions which intensified during the country’s 12-year civil war betweenFood insecurity in afflicted parts of Syria was “very bad” before the earthquake, the Middle East director of the UN World Food Programme, Corinne Fleischer, said, but it has now risen to “dramatic” levels.
“Even at the height of the war, we didn’t have 12 million people food insecure,” she said in an interview with Associated Presson Monday to grant the opening of two more routes to deliver aid from Turkey to the north-west for an initial three months. Before that, the UN could only send aid via the Bab al-Hawa crossing, which was reopened last Thursday after being shut for three days, due to road damage caused by the earthquake.
A similar appeal for southern Turkey will be launched in “the coming days”, UN spokesman Stephane Dujarri said. The move by Damascus to open additional border crossings a week after the quake was more political than humanitarian, said Joseph Daher, a Swiss-Syrian researcher and professor at the European University Institute in Florence, Italy.
