Woman, 40, with 'lack of intellect' mows down blind man and leaves him for dead while speeding on the way home from chippy
A woman who mowed down a blind man and left him for dead in the road as she raced home with a fish and chip supper has been jailed. Charlene Bellis, 40, ploughed into Christopher Hollywood as he crossed the road with his golden Labrador guide dog Caesar while showing off to her teenage daughter.
In a statement to police he said: ''This whole incident left me shocked and overwhelmed. She took the time to apologise to me but then drove away without calling me an ambulance. She had no idea whether I’d even survive when she left. "In an effort to deal with this impact, I now receive talking therapy as well as CBT. For the first time in my life, I have been forced to take anti-depressants as well as constant physio sessions to cope with my situation and mood. Her actions have affected every area of my life and all of the people close to me."
''One eye witness had noticed the defendant was driving at an excessive speed before the incident, far in excess of the area's 30 mph speed limit Another said the defendant cut the corner at a high speed. Neil Ronan, defending, said: "The first thing the defendant told me today was that she wanted the victim to know how much guilt and remorse she feels for what she has done. It weighs heavily on her mind.
