A 75-year-old woman in Ohio was tragically killed and partially consumed by her neighbor's pigs. Police are investigating the incident, but details are limited due to the ongoing nature of the case. There are no clear legal precedents for fatal attacks involving livestock, adding complexity to the investigation.
75-year-old Rebecca Westergaard was killed and partially eaten by her neighbor's pigs after they roamed near her home in Pataskala, Ohio . Police Chief Bruce Brooks spoke to the publication, telling them that officers responded to the residence after receiving a call for a welfare check from the victim's niece. The publication reported that Westergaard was expected to leave her home at around 10:30 a.m. to visit her niece's residence in Norton, Ohio .
that Westergaard was discovered near her home, describing the case as a 'horrible, horrible situation.' The publication reported that not much information was shared due to the ongoing investigation, which is expected to wrap up in four to six weeks. When speaking to the outlet, Chief Brooks said it was unclear what will happen to the neighbor's pigs or whether their owner will face any criminal charges, but confirmed that police are communicating with the Licking County Prosecutor's Office. The police chief did not identify the owner of the pigs, adding that no one has been charged with a crime at this time. City council member Mary Hite, who lives around a quarter mile from Westergaard's home, spoke to the publication on Monday and said the pigs involved were not hogs from her farm. Chief Brooks also added that while Ohio law has a clear process for fatal dog attacks, there aren't any in regards to fatal attacks involving livestock that prosecutors and law enforcement have found. 'If it was a pit bull or a Rottweiler, or name any of the other 15 dogs that are deemed semi aggressive, then we would know the answer right away,' Chief Brooks told the publication. 'But being farm animals, it's just not something we've ever dealt with here.
