Nearly a dozen people will be displaced from their homes ahead of the holiday after a fire at a west Phoenix apartment complex, and we're learning one woman had to jump from her second-story unit with her dog to escape the flames. Firefighters were called to the scene just after 9 a.m. near 20th and Glendale avenues on December 24 after a resident called 911 after seeing smoke coming from an apartment.
'All residents were able to safely exit the structure under their own power and the fire was quickly contained and extinguished by firefighters,' said Phoenix Fire Department Captain Scott Douglas. Crews were able to put out the flames, but four units suffered heavy fire and smoke damage. Sylvia Reese lives in one of the units and says she jumped from that second story to escape the flames. 'More men were running.. they were running towards me screaming. And they just said, ‘Jump.. can’t you just jump?' I was kind of afraid. Because it was high. But I jumped and they caught me.' Sylvia says she does not know when she'll be able to return to her home. She's one of 10 people that will be displaced. Another woman was evaluated for smoke inhalation and is in stable condition. No other injuries were reported. The cause of the fire is under investigation. Douglas says the fire department's crisis response team will assist the displaced families with their needs this holiday weekend
